Mo Ganji reflects on the red panda — a small arboreal mammal inhabiting temperate mountain forests of the eastern Himalayas — through the discipline of the single line, allowing essence to surface by deliberate reduction. Ailurus fulgens is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Native to Nepal, Bhutan, India, Myanmar and China, the species occupies fragmented forest habitats dominated by bamboo undergrowth. Wild populations are declining, with estimates suggesting fewer than 10,000 mature individuals remain.

The principal threats include habitat loss and fragmentation due to logging, agriculture and infrastructure development, as well as poaching and disturbance from livestock grazing. Because red pandas rely on continuous forest canopy and specific bamboo resources, even small-scale disruption can render habitats unsuitable. Climate change further threatens bamboo availability and forest stability.
