Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Mekong giant catfish — one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, native to the main channels of the Mekong River — by allowing its inner coherence to surface without emphasis on size, power or rarity. The continuous line holds a concentrated core of presence, enough to suggest a being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “catfish.” In this distillation of the essential, form appears before scale or myth takes hold.

Pangasianodon gigas is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Mekong River basin, the species once migrated freely across long stretches of the river in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Today, populations have collapsed dramatically, and confirmed wild individuals are extremely rare.

The principal threats include dam construction that blocks migration routes, alteration of natural flow regimes, overfishing, and habitat degradation. Because the Mekong giant catfish relies on long-distance migration for spawning and feeding, fragmentation of the river system has had devastating consequences. Its slow growth and late maturity further limit recovery potential.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the catfish can be encountered beyond magnitude or legend. It invites attention to a presence shaped by current and continuity, quietly reminding us that rivers treated as infrastructure rather than living systems lose more than movement — and that recognizing ourselves as part of these flowing ecologies is inseparable from allowing such ancient lives to endure.
