Mo Ganji’s single line engages the Madagascar fish eagle — a large raptor dependent on lakes, rivers and coastal wetlands — by allowing its essential presence to emerge without emphasis on dominance or spectacle. Haliaeetus vociferoides is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to Madagascar, the species has one of the smallest populations of any eagle worldwide, with only a few hundred individuals remaining. It inhabits a narrow network of freshwater lakes, rivers and coastal lagoons, making it highly sensitive to environmental change.

The principal threats include habitat degradation from deforestation and wetland conversion, declining fish stocks, human disturbance at nesting sites, and direct persecution. Because the eagle relies on stable aquatic ecosystems and long-established nesting territories, even localized habitat loss can have disproportionate impacts. Low reproductive rates further constrain recovery.
