Clouded Leopard | Nebelparder | Neofelis nebulosa

Mo Ganji’s single line approaches the clouded leopard — a medium-sized wild cat with striking cloud-shaped markings and a remarkably flexible body — as a gesture that distills its presence into a single, quiet contour. The line offers only the essence of a feline outline, enough to evoke recognition without anchoring the form to the full complexity of “leopard.” By letting detail fall away, Ganji creates a space where the being may appear before concept takes hold.

Neofelis nebulosa is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. Native to dense forests of Southeast Asia and parts of the Himalayan foothills, the species depends on intact canopy cover and healthy prey populations. Although still present across several countries, its numbers are steadily declining, and suitable habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented.

The primary threats are deforestation for agriculture and logging, poaching for the wildlife trade, and depletion of prey species. As forests shrink and become dissected into smaller patches, clouded leopards lose the continuous cover they rely on for hunting, movement and shelter. Their elusive nature, while protective in some contexts, also makes it difficult to monitor population trends accurately.

Ganji’s  single line offers a moment in which the leopard’s presence can arise free from expectation. In this reduced form, the animal appears not as a category within human taxonomy but as a living essence deserving of attention. And the drawing subtly reminds us that our tendency to imagine ourselves apart from nature obscures the reality that our destinies are deeply interwoven with the landscapes and lives we influence.
