Mo Ganji’s single line turns toward the Chinese sturgeon — a long-lived, river-migrating fish with an ancient, armored profile — as a gesture that reduces form to its most essential trace. The continuous line offers only a quiet indication of presence, one that gestures toward “sturgeon” without demanding that the viewer settle on that category. Through this minimal expression, essence is allowed to emerge before concept solidifies.

Acipenser sinensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Native to the Yangtze River and adjacent coastal waters, the species once undertook extensive upriver migrations to spawn. Today, wild reproduction has nearly ceased. Dams have blocked migratory routes, riverbeds have been altered by sand mining, and decades of overfishing have devastated populations.

Additional threats include pollution, vessel traffic, and habitat degradation throughout the Yangtze system. Although captive breeding and release programs exist, the lack of suitable spawning habitats and the fragmentation of the river severely limit their effectiveness. The species now survives largely through human intervention, with natural recruitment extremely rare.

Ganji’s line offers a distilled moment in which the being can be sensed apart from the frameworks we impose upon it.
