Bottlenose Wedgefish | Flaschennasen-Keilrochen | Rhynchobatus australiae
In Mo Ganji’s single line drawing of the bottlenose wedgefish, the line functions as an open gesture rather than a depiction. a movement that reveals only the most essential suggestion of form. The contour offers a presence that may be recognised as a wedgefish, yet it resists being reduced to this category alone. By holding back detail, the line creates space for an essence to surface, for a being to appear before the viewer applies any conceptual framing.
Rhynchobatus australiae is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Found across the Indo-West Pacific, the species once inhabited shallow coastal waters from Southeast Asia to northern Australia. Today, populations have collapsed throughout much of this range due to intense fishing pressure — both targeted and as bycatch — combined with degradation of coastal habitats.
The principal threats include overexploitation for meat and high-value fins, incidental capture in trawl and gillnet fisheries, and the loss of mangrove and seagrass habitats crucial for juveniles. Because wedgefish mature slowly and reproduce at low rates, depleted populations struggle to recover even when pressures are reduced. Fragmentation of remaining habitats further limits their resilience.
Ganji’s single line invites a quieter form of attention. By offering only a distilled outline, the drawing encourages recognition freed from rigid definitions. A reminder that the beings we classify exist in their own unfolding, not in the categories we assign. And it gently suggests that humans often overlook their own embeddedness in the natural world, forgetting that they, too, belong to the continuum they attempt to organise and control.
