Mo Ganji’s single line approaches the Balkan lynx by seeking a calm structural clarity. Rather than describing the animal’s powerful build or patterned fur, the drawing offers a reduced portrait that hints at its solitary presence. Through the deliberate removal of detail, Ganji’s line opens a space in which the lynx’s essence can be sensed.

Lynx lynx balcanicus is one of the rarest felines in Europe. This subspecies of the Eurasian lynx occurs only in parts of the western Balkans, primarily North Macedonia and Albania, with possible individuals in Kosovo and Montenegro. The Balkan lynx is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List at the subspecies level. Population estimates suggest that only a few dozen mature individuals remain, forming a highly fragile and fragmented population.

Major threats include habitat loss, decline of prey species such as roe deer and chamois, poaching, and accidental persecution. Because the population is extremely small and isolated, genetic bottlenecks and low reproductive rates further heighten the risk of extinction. Conservation initiatives — including protected areas, monitoring programs and public awareness campaigns — are ongoing but face significant challenges.
