Mo Ganji draws near to the saola — a forest-dwelling ungulate inhabiting the dense Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam — by letting the single line search for inner essence rather than revelation or myth. The line gathers the being into a reduced coherence, withholding rarity, elusiveness and symbolic projection so that presence can surface without explanation. In Ganji’s understanding, the line is not bound to the saola alone; it remains open, acknowledging that every figure is also a human concept briefly anchored to something largely unseen.

Pseudoryx nghetinhensis is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Discovered by science only in 1992, the saola is one of the most enigmatic large mammals in the world. It is known from a very limited range along the Laos–Vietnam border, and no confirmed sightings in the wild have been documented for several years, leading to grave concern about its continued survival.

The principal threats include intensive snaring for bushmeat, habitat fragmentation from logging and infrastructure development, and the expansion of human activity into remote forest areas. Although saola are not directly targeted, indiscriminate wire snares set for other animals pose a lethal threat. Their extreme rarity and sensitivity to captivity have hindered conservation interventions.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the saola can be encountered beyond discovery narrative or legend. It allows attention to rest on a life shaped by absence and concealment, suggesting how some beings slip toward disappearance not through confrontation, but by remaining just beyond the threshold of sustained human attention.
