Viverra civettina is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List and is considered possibly extinct. Endemic to the Western Ghats of southern India, the species was historically associated with lowland evergreen forests, marshes and agricultural mosaics. Confirmed records are exceedingly rare, and no verified sightings have occurred for several decades.

The principal threats include extensive habitat loss from conversion to agriculture, drainage of wetlands, hunting, and the use of snares. Because the civet relied on lowland habitats that were among the first to be transformed by human settlement, its decline likely unfolded quietly and largely unnoticed. The lack of recent evidence leaves its continued existence uncertain.
