Mo Ganji’s single line attends to the Javan green magpie — a forest-dwelling songbird with vivid green plumage adapted to dense montane habitats — by allowing its inner coherence to surface without ornamental emphasis. The continuous line holds a distilled sense of presence, enough to suggest a living being while remaining open to meanings beyond the category of “bird.” In this exposure of the core, form appears before colour, rarity or expectation takes hold.

Cissa thalassina is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the island of Java, the species inhabits montane forests that have been drastically reduced and fragmented. Wild populations have declined to extremely low numbers, and the bird is now rarely encountered in its natural habitat.

The principal threats include extensive habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural expansion, as well as intense pressure from illegal trapping for the cage-bird trade. Because the species has a very limited range and is highly sought after, even small levels of continued removal from the wild have severe impacts. Fragmentation further isolates remaining individuals and undermines recovery.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which the magpie can be encountered beyond its striking appearance or its value within human desire. It invites attention to a presence shaped by forest depth and continuity, quietly reminding us that what humans prize most visibly is often what they endanger most profoundly — and that recognizing ourselves as part of the same living systems is inseparable from allowing such fragile forms of life to endure.
