Mo Ganji approaches Rafflesia mira — a parasitic flowering plant that emerges briefly from rainforest hosts — through the discipline of the single line, letting essence appear by radical reduction. The unbroken line withdraws from spectacle and scale, holding a concentrated presence that resists being fixed as “flower” alone. In Ganji’s thinking, the line is free to be something else as well, reminding us that every depiction is also a human concept temporarily assigned to a living process.

Rafflesia mira is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. Endemic to the Philippines, the species is known from very few locations and depends entirely on specific host vines (Tetrastigma spp.) within intact forest ecosystems. Its life cycle is largely hidden, with the massive bloom appearing only briefly, making monitoring and protection especially difficult.

The principal threats include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and disturbance of host plants. Because Rafflesia species lack leaves, stems and roots of their own, any damage to the surrounding forest directly undermines their survival. Extremely small population sizes and specialized ecological dependence leave little margin for recovery once habitats are altered.

Ganji’s single line opens a space in which this fleeting presence can be encountered without fascination or excess. It allows attention to rest on a life that exists mostly unseen, suggesting that what is most extraordinary in nature often survives not through visibility, but through the fragile continuity of conditions that allow it to appear at all.
